John Parnell "The euphoria of just being." For the past 25 years John Parnell has been working with the figure as a major focus within his paintings. The work has evolved over the years from elaborate dreamscapes to the minimalist, enigmatic paintings of his present works. They are about the euphoria of just being. Their meaning is enigmatic. These works are the expression of an inner world. The figure floats in an ambient, embryonic, dream equipoise, and is often the only recognizable form in an otherwise abstract environment. The environment is one of paint, stains and mark making. Like a visual poem the meaning is indirect and the viewer is invited to interpret the meaning through personal filters. While each work is inviting, intimate and accessible to the viewer, they reveal themselves more with each viewing. There are subtle interplays between the forms, shapes and colours within the composition, the content is a mix of symbols and shapes. Space is right at the surface of the canvas, and yet there is apparition in, around, and between each paint stroke, making the work both abstract and surreal. The paintings are rich with pigments staining the surface, starting with a soft ground, which colours the raw canvas like an uneven patina. The sparing applications of colours bring forth the forms, which interacts with the shapes and paint strokes within the composition. The finished piece has mystique, depicting an innocent, natural aesthetic, existing in a graceful state of being. These paintings are visceral, in subject and feeling, depicted with simplicity that appends to the concord and tranquility that each painting contains. Johns prints are each created as a singular representation and not as an edition. They are a combination of his paintings, digital drawings, scanned objects and photography, remixed in the computer to create unique new images. John then prints each one in house giving him complete control over the process and materials. There are therefore no multiples, but rather each image is printed once and never duplicated. They are produced using Epson archival inks on 100% rag paper, for quality and longevity.
